The Salvation Army helps many people meet their basic needs throughout the year, and with the Christmas season approaching the need rises even more. You can help us meet those needs by volunteering or donating to any of our programs.

November - December 24: Christmas Kettle Programs & Volunteering.

2-3 hour volunteer shifts are available six days a week at various locations throughout Calgary, Airdrie, Balzac and Cochrane

Family Christmas Assistance Program

Registration begins October 15, 2009 for the Family Christmas Assistance Program, where potential recipients are screened and must qualify as low income based on City of Calgary guidelines.

This program's all-encompassing vision is to share the spirit of Christmas with families in need. The Salvation Army will provide grocery store gift cards and toys for children, up to age 17. Referrals to other Salvation Army programs or outside agencies are available when other needs are present.

October 26 - December 18: Focused Toy Drive

Sharing the spirit of Christmas with Families in need.
The Focused Toy Drive provides toys for children and teens of low income families according to highest needs. Sometimes certain age groups are overlooked when donations come in so we've created a Focused Toy Drive to help alleviate that problem. The list below was designed to identify our greatest needs and items:

November 4 - December 19: Toy Mountain.

Drop off a new, unwrapped toy at any of the following locations:

  • Petro Canada gas stations
  • Westbrook Mall
  • Marlbrough Mall
  • Gracie & Gruff Toys (Bankers Hall & 9309 McLeod Trail S)
  • Fifth Avenue Auto Haus (1120 Meridian Rd NE)

  • Northland Village Shops

November 18: Christmas Kettles Kick-off Luncheon.

Join us this November for our 5th Annual Kettle Kick-off luncheon with our guest speaker, Thomas Caldwell, CEO of Caldwell Securities Ltd.

The luncheon will be held at the Westin Hotel, 320-4th Avenue SW from 12:00-1:30pm. Tickets must be purchased in advance, and are available for $65.00 or $600.00 for a table of 10.

November 23 - December 24: Jack FM's Toys for Teens.

This Christmas, JACK FM in partnership with ATB Financial are asking for your help to collect Toys For Teens. The Salvation Army provides toys to children and teens for families in need; however year after year, teens and tweens are overlooked when people are shopping for “children” at Christmas.

Together we are looking out for boys and girls aged 10 – 17.

Highest needs items include books, small mp3 players, puzzles, board games, electronic games, art supplies, sports items and gift cards.

To donate, simply drop off a new unwrapped teen appropriate gift (or donate cash) at any ATB branch before December 24th. All toys will be collected and distributed by The Salvation Army - Family Christmas Assistance Program.

December 13: A Night in Bethlehem

Join us at Glenmore Temple (921-68 Ave SW) for an interactive evening from 3:00-6:00pm to experience what it would have been like the night Jesus was born, including a live nativity scene. Everyone is invited to come along dressed as one would at that time (optional).

December 13: Teddy Bear Toss

Join us December 13 at Pengrowth Saddledone and the Calgary Hitmen for our annual Teddy Bear Toss. All new bears will be given to children through The Salvation Army and other charities.

November 20: Christmas Kettle Kick-off

7:30pm at the Dragon's Game. Volunteers needed November 20 - December 24, Monday to Saturday. Times and locations are flexible, please contact Gunner at (403) 823-9825.


November 23-24: Christmas Assistance Registration

If you need support, please call to make an appointment, (403) 823-2215. Volunteers also needed for various roles.


November 26-28: Annual Food Drive

Sorting at Co-op Mall, Nov 26 from 6:00-9:00pm and Nov 27 & 28 during the day. Mondays and Wednesdays at the Salvation Army (242-1 Street W). Pick-up Driver also needed to pick up toys and food around town.


December 5: Encana's Teddy Toss

Bring a stuffed toy or a donation to toss a teddy at the Dragon's game.

December 7: Hamper Packing

Packing non-perishable items from 9:30am - 3:00pm at The Salvation Army.


December 14: Toy Packing

Selecting and packing toys from 9:30am - 3:00pm at The Salvation Army.


December 17: Christmas Hamper & Toy Distribution

Volunteers needed for various roles throughout the day. Pelase call (403) 823-2215


December 18: Co-op's Fill Your Cart

Bring a food donation and have a chance to win a cart full of groceries at the Dragon's game.


December 19: Pancake Breakfast

Come and enjoy a hot breakfast at O'Shea's from 7:00am - 10:00am, for a donation.


December 22: Christmas Carolling

Pine Place, 6:00pm


December 24: Christmas Eve Service

November 19 - December 24: Christmas Kettle Campaign

Donations to the Christmas Kettle Campaign go directly to the local Community & Family Services centre, which provides social services to the community such food banks, toys, Christmas hampers, spiritual care and more.

Christmas Kettle volunteers are needed in Edmonton, Sherwood Park and St. Albert, at various locations.

November 21: Gift Show at Castledowns Church

10:00am - 4:00pm. Tables for the gift show are available to vendors for $40.

November 23: Christmas Kettles Campaign Launch.

The Edmonton Temple Band will help us launch our Christmas Kettle Campaign at the Edmonton Oilers game on November 23rd by playing the 2 national anthems. Kettles will also be set up to accept donations.
 

November 20 - December 24: Christmas Kettle Programs & Volunteering.

We have many volunteer opportunites available for our Christmas campaign. If you are interested in volunteering this season, please contact Devony at 780-412-2635.

Hamper Maker
Make foodhampers for families in need.

Food Sorter
Sort donated food into food categories.

Hamper Distributor
Give out premade hampers to people in need at one location. Some heavy lifting is needed.

December 2: ARC Christmas Dinner

Volunteers are needed to assist with the Christmas Dinner December 2, from 4:00-6:00pm.

December 13: Live Nativity

Join us for an outdoor nativity with live animals December 13, from 4:00pm - 7:00pm. Castledowns Church is located at 12404-140 Avenue, behind the Superstore.

Join us December 19th at 10am at Hawrelak Park for our annual Fun Run and Elf Walk.

Please join us for our annual Christmas Concert at the Winspear Centre on December 20th. Doors open at 6:30pm, show starts at 7:00pm.

November 2 - Decemebr 11: Adopt-a-Family Program

Families in need of some extra assistance during this time of the year are encouraged to be anonymously “adopted” by various groups, families and businesses within the Red Deer community, coordinated by The Salvation Army.  It is also a great team-building event for groups and families to get involved in.  Information and applications to be an “adopted” family or to sponsor a family can be obtained by calling Shawna or Fern at 403-346-2251. 

November 20 - December 23: Christmas Kettle Campaign

Join us in helping us raise $175,000 for this year’s campaign by making a donation at any one of our Kettles, located throughout the Red Deer area.  Money raised directly supports The Salvation Army’s community services here in Red Deer, including our food bank and other emergency needs services.  To volunteer, please contact Lorraine Oakes, our Christmas Kettle Coordinator at 403-346-2251.  Day and evening shifts available.

December 5: Breakfast With Santa

Join us for The Salvation Army’s 3rd Annual “Breakfast with Santa” event December 5th at 9:00am.  Enjoy a hot breakfast buffet, Christmas carol singing, crafts and a visit from Santa!  Gift for each child 12 years of age or younger.  Tickets are $5 Adults, $2 children under 12 and are available through the office of The Salvation Army, 403-346-2251.  This event sells out fast!


December: Hospital & Care Home Christmas Visitation

There are several volunteer opportunities with our Community Care Ministries Team during December as they distribute gifts to those in the hospital as well as in various seniors’ homes throughout Red Deer.  For a schedule of dates, locations and times, please contact Terry Bollinger at 403-346-2251.


December 24: Candlelight Service

We welcome you to escape from the “hustle and bustle” of this season, for a beautiful hour of music, scripture and prayer in honour of the birth of Jesus Christ.  Please feel free to bring friends and family and enjoy a worship experience to celebrate and remind us of the true meaning of Christmas. 6:30-7:30pm.


December 25: Christmas Day Dinner

We invite you to enjoy a traditional Christmas dinner Friday December 25th, from 12:00-1:00pm (take out dinners are also available). We are pleased to once again partner with Associated Cab who will provide free transportation to and from our Christmas dinner at no cost to you.  Volunteers are needed for set-up, cooking and clean up.  Please contact Jason at 403-346-2251.

November 27: Christmas Kettle Kick-off

Join us and the Mayor at 5:00pm at the downtown liquor store to officially kick off our Kettle Campaign.  

December 6: Vigil of Rememberance for L'Ecole Polytechnique

From 2:00-4:00pm at the Salvation Army church. The singing group, "Hands of God" will perform. Coffee and refreshments will be served.

December 6: Community Carol Fest.

Join us at St. Joe's Catholic Church where the Salvation Army Tibrels will perform, as well as singing group, "Hands of God".


December 7 - 10: Christmas Hampers

During the evenings, food will be sorted and Christmas Hampers will be packed. For more information, please call 920-4673.


December 14 - 18: Christmas Hamper delivery.

December 18: Open House at Bailey House.

12:00pm - 3:00pm. Refreshments will be served.


December 20: Carols and Gift Delivery.

10:30am - Children will perform "Footprints to the Manger" at the Salvation Army church. Refreshments to follow performance.
2:00pm - delivering gifts and singing carols to Elders Home and Stanton Hospital.


December 24: Candlelight Service.

7:00pm at the Salvation Army Church.


December 25: Christmas Day Community Feast.

7:00pm at the Salvation Army Shelter. Open to everyone.


December 27: Carols and Readings Service.

10:30am at the Salvation Army church.
